The plot follows Jeremy Fitzgerald, who takes a summer job as a night guard at Utah's Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Prior to the game, a previous location featuring "Generation 1" animatronics closed in 1986 due to the disappearance of children. The opening cutscene reveals William Afton luring a child in a Spring Bonnie costume, leading to their death.
A year later in 1987, a new company reopened the restaurant with advanced "Generation 2" animatronics featuring security measures. As Jeremy works his shifts, the animatronics come to life. Throughout the game, Jeremy discovers arcade cabinets that reveal the tragic backstory of the missing children.
In the Good Ending route, The Puppet confronts Jeremy, revealing she gave life to the deceased children through the Generation 1 animatronics: Gabriel (Freddy), Jeremy (Bonnie), Fritz (Foxy), Susie (Chica), and Cassidy. The Puppet threatens Jeremy for discovering the truth, believing he wants to take away their second chance at life.
The game concludes with The Mangle being responsible for the Bite of 1987, as evidenced by blood found in her jaw. Michael Afton later discovers the truth about the possessed animatronics after Jeremy's final shift.

The initial 2023 release received mixed reception due to grainy visuals and rushed development. Dot-e later described the original development as a "nightmare." However, the Overhaul Part 1 update released in April 2025 was met with widespread acclaim.
The Overhaul features sophisticated atmospheres, engaging narrative elements, faithful yet unique gameplay, and high-quality animatronic designs. The Puppet's intrusions during minigames in the Good Ending route were particularly praised. The update introduced a brand new map with improved visuals and stress-inducing mechanics.
Following this release, Dot-e announced it would be her final Five Nights at Freddy's related work, cancelling the planned third installment to focus on original projects.
